Sweat it Out

Races with A heat index above 75.

We all know Western States gets hot. Painfully hot. Triple-digits-down-in-the-canyons hot. But the grandmother of 100-milers doesn’t sit alone in the sauna. There are plenty of other races out there that’ll work up a sweat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) defines the heat index as the “measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.”  A heat index of 80 or above breaks the “caution” threshold for the “likelihood of heat disorders with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity.” (What about prolonged exposure and strenuous activity?!) By the way, “exposure to full sunshine can increase heat index values by up to 15 degrees.”

These races have day-time heat indexes of 75 or above — approaching the “caution” threshold of 80. Make sure you have your hydration dialed in and don’t forget to bring your own shade (BYOS).

Average Elevation: 10,974’ (280% of 100-mile average)

High Point: 14,013’

With an average elevation of nearly 11,000 feet, Hardrock holds exclusive rights to the two-mile high club. (We would have made a separate category but decided it wouldn’t be that interesting with one race.) If you’re lucky enough to navigate the lottery and kiss the rock, though, you can and should tell your friends you joined the two-mile high club.
